Frequently asked

When do you need fixed vertical ladders with a safety cage?

Murdoch International is a leading manufacturer of access equipment and we are committed to providing our customers with safe and reliable products that meet all relevant industry standards. In line with BS5395, all of our permanent access ladders that are over 3m in height are fitted with safety cages to provide an additional level of safety for users.

Our ladders also have an intermediate landing (rest platform) at every 6m, in accordance with the requirements set out in BS5395. In addition, Murdoch International offers a fall arrest system which can be used in lieu of a safety cage and rest platform, providing an alternative solution for customers who require fall protection on their ladder.

Murdoch International ladders also comply with the requirement for rungs to have 180mm of clearance to accommodate toe space while climbing the ladder. This ensures that users have adequate space to safely climb the ladder without risking injury. Murdoch International is dedicated to providing products that meet the highest standards of safety and quality, and we are proud to offer our customers a range of safe and reliable access solutions.

Where do you place fixed access ladders?

Fixed ladders, also known as access ladders, caged ladders, vertical access ladders, cat ladders, aluminium ladders or galvanised ladders are suitable for any high-quality structure that is capable of withstanding the additional load exerted by the system.

They provide a means of accessing a working platform at height safely and securely and are an essential item of fall protection equipment. Caged access ladders are available in a range of sizes and specifications to suit the application and can be customised to meet the needs of the user.

There are three main types of fixed ladder; standard, close coupled and extended base. Standard fixed ladders have a wide range of applications and are suitable for use in most situations.

Close coupled fixed ladders are designed for use where space is limited, such as in mezzanine floors, and extended base fixed ladders are ideal for use where there is an obstruction at the bottom of the ladder, such as a handrail.

What are Murdoch fixed ladders made from?

We manufacture our fixed ladders in either aluminium or galvanised steel to ensure a long lasting and durable product. Aluminium is a strong and lightweight material, making it ideal for use in ladders. Galvanised steel is also a strong material, but it is heavier than aluminium. We offer a range of finishes for our ladders, including powder coating and hot dip galvanising.

Powder coating is a type of paint that is applied to the ladder to protect it from corrosion and damage. Hot dip galvanising is a process that coats the ladder in a layer of zinc, which also helps to protect against corrosion and damage. We offer a range of colours for our powder coated ladders, so you can choose the perfect match for your environment.

We can also provide customised branding for your ladder, so you can promote your company or organisation while you work. Contact us today to find out more about our caged access ladders.

What safety standards do fixed access ladders require?

We believe that safety should always come first, which is why we offer a full inspection, testing, certification and maintenance service for existing working at height equipment. This includes access ladders, which are required to be tested every 12 months in accordance with BS5395 & BS4211: 2004 standards.

We understand the importance of compliance and will work with you to ensure that all of your equipment is up to date and meets the latest safety regulations. We also offer a wide range of new caged access ladders that are compliant with BS5395 & BS4211: 2004 standards, so you can rest assured that you are using the safest possible products.

Contact us today to learn more about our services or to place an order. We look forward to working with you.

What is a fixed vertical ladder?

A fixed vertical ladder is a permanently fixed access structure for means of access and egress from buildings, machinery, roof tops and other structures such as silos and mezzanine floors.

Why do I need a fixed ladder?

Fixed ladders are needed for access, maintenance and inspection, and fire escape.

What material do I choose?

The material should be considered before install. Aluminium is generally used for indoor applications as is lightweight and easier to install. On the other hand, galvanised steel is considered more robust and weather proof, so is the most common selection for outdoor installations.
